Project Description

Wezesha: Answer to the domestic violence towards people with disabilities in the slum of Kibera

Persons with disabilities (Pcd) are found to be the object of stigma in their family and community, as well as at school and at work, they are victims of discriminatory attitudes, even violent, derived from beliefs and prejudices developed around their condition that, often internalized, hinder their full participation in social and economic life. Many of these cases of harassment and violence are not reported and go unpunished. Prejudices and marginalizing behaviour develop where ignorance and fear of diversity thrive, and hence a constant marginalization that is reflected in the creation of barriers to entry into the world of work and the full enjoyment of the rights of the person.

The exclusion of persons with disabilities from access to available informations, in particular on COVID-19, is exposing them to increased levels of violence without knowledge of available response mechanisms.
All these factors are obviously exacerbated in a fragile context such as that of Kibera, the largest slum in Nairobi with about 1 million people.

The project, presented to the Open Society Foundation in partnership with CPS and GCC, aims to contribute to i) increasing the awareness of Pcds of their rights and mechanisms for responding to violence ii) reducing all forms of violence against them in Kenya and in particular in the Kibera slum iii) creating new means sustainable and effective to support victims of violence.
